Web Design Animation

Animation on a website (Web Design Animation) is a very controversial issue with two schools of thought. The first suggesting that websites should never use animation because it distracts the user from the main content on the page. The second that website animation can enhance the user experience if used moderately. Lets dissect the two arguments and look at the facts of each argument. Creating a defined strategy of whether to use web design animation or not.

Anti Website Animation

As mentioned above, anything that distracts the user from reading your content is not helping your content to do it's job, selling your products or services. However, if the website animation is reinforcing your sales content, is it adversely effecting your conversion rate? Some will say yes, because even if the web design animation has attractive sales copy it distracts the users eye when their reading the more detailed non-animated sales copy. A very valid point but a few things spring to mind:

How much web design animation is required to distract the user?

Most people from this school of thought will say any amount of animation. However, what if the animation is so small E.g an animated shine on a logo, surely this would not be enough to distract the user and can actually increase the websites look and appeal, increasing conversion.

Animated Sales Pitch

Another example is an animation that is not on a loop E.g you could have a web banner at the top of the page that runs through a quick sequence of animation, highlighting the benefits of the product or service the page focuses on. The animation displays a few pictures of the product or service with a few animated captions, evoking stimulation and excitement. When the animation has run through the sequence once it simply stops and becomes a clean looking image of the product or service with a thought provoking caption. This would provide the benefits of using animation to run through a small sales pitch as soon as the page is loaded but would not distract the user when they come to reading the main content. In other words, a happy medium.

Web Design Animation and a Happy Medium

We believe that both schools of thought have valid points but do not conform to either, and instead like to conduct web design that takes into account each point. Using animation on a website can be a very powerful tool and if used correctly can increase interest in products and services, further increasing conversion rates and ROI.

The above example of using a website animation that stops at a certain point caters for both schools of thought, gaining the benefit of both. Using website animation in this fashion is a fantastic method of increasing awareness of certain promotion you may have on, presenting the sales pitch when the page loads and stopping after a given time. You can even have "click to see again" button on it to restart the animation.

Off-Site Web Banner Advertising

Off-site web banner advertising is a method of advertising your website via a web banner placed on another website advertising your Company, products and or services. You could use a static web banner with nice image and a slogan, "Click Here To Buy". This game is all about drawing as much attention to your web banner advertisement as possible and what better than an in-your-face animated web banner. although we don't like using or recommending web banner advertising, because of the typically low ROI from small referral and conversion rates. If you are going to use this method of internet marketing, an animated web banner can increase ROI dramatically (although still small compared to other types of internet marketing).
